Read the left-hand end carefully. These are vehicles that hold an MOT record today, not registrations made in that year. A 2003 column is what is left of 2003, so the further back you read, the more the curve is survival rather than popularity.

Counted over every vehicle on the record. The region is where the plate was issued, which is not where the vehicle is.

What these charts can and cannot say

  • They are a record of survivors. A vehicle appears here because it has an MOT record. Scrapped cars leave, so an old year is thinner than it was.
  • First registration is not manufacture. The default year is the date the DVLA first registered the vehicle. An import is registered here years after it was built, which is why the built year is offered as the other basis — it is derived, and less reliable.
  • A rate needs a denominator worth having. Pass rates and mileage medians over a thin year wobble. The number of vehicles behind every point travels with it — hover, or open the numbers.
  • Nothing here identifies anyone. Every figure is a count or a median over many vehicles. No registration, no name, no address, no history of who owned what.
